EDITORIAL
The HOW , the INFORMATICS
and WHERE WE ARE GOING
In the first edition of newDATAmagazine®
for 2023, we are publishing a special edition
focused on technology, with the recovery of
the Future.TECH(k)now! column pieces from
the last few issues, to which we have added
new ones that bring topics that are sure to
please our readers.
When, in the initial design of
newDATAmagazine®, the name for this
column was thought of, the intention was
that it should accommodate two readings:
The first, Future Technology Now, makes
room for topics such as the speed of
technology evolution, possible applications,
the humanisation of technology, the
replacement of people by technology, the
dangers of technology, etc. These allow us to
have contact with and understand today
what may be the technological development
in the future.
The second, Future Technology Know,
contains the dimension of knowledge of
those who talk about technology. The
democratisation of the internet has
facilitated the emergence of much
information about almost everything, whose
factuality is increasingly challenging to verify.
Although knowledge has been at the basis
of humanity's significant evolutions, it seems
that in some moments, luck and chance have
also contributed. Nevertheless, we often
resort to validated knowledge to find answers
to the HOW: How to do this task? How to act
in that situation? How to make the best
decision? But the rapid evolution of computer

systems, information systems, and the
internet has allowed us to shift the onus of
answering the HOW to computers, as
opposed to the reality of nearly three decades
ago, when books still had this role. Today,
there is a computer search for every question
and countless answers at our fingertips.
It would seem, therefore, that IT has
brought answers to all of humanity's
problems, but this could not be further from
the truth. For instance, we are currently
witnessing deep dialogues about the role of
IT in the generation of knowledge and
decision-making using artificial intelligence,
as if it were a miraculous technological
solution and, at the same time, serious
weaknesses are exposed frequently, which
compromise its use, at least in the near
future.
History tells us where we came from, and a
careful reading of the current reality allows us
to understand where we are (at least from our
perspective), but to glimpse WHERE WE ARE
GOING, we need a guide. And it is precisely
because of the complexity, fragility and
seriousness of these issues that it is
imperative to count on those who know. For
this reason, we challenged Bruno Miguel
Silva to coordinate this column because,
more than writing, it is necessary to know
(about) what is written.
